Paul, there are hundreds of approaches.

Vector Magic is king but requires tribute, Inkscape is free.
If something is offered free on-line and is AI then give it a swerve until you've read the Ts & Cs and have found some review of it. A number convert to SVG but simply embed the image.

one thing to note - I have tried many different ways, and all of the approaches will give you shapes - if you are looking for a way to convert image lines to manipulative vector lines, that is not going to be possible AFAIK [you just have to redraw]
