By markers, do you mean Guides?
Each Variant is a separate (but linked) design file.
If I have created a Guide Layer and added a shape of lines to it, when I make a Variant, this all copies over.
If it it the grid, you need to press Show Grid (#).

Got it, it was the magnet icon. Snap to grid is what I wanted, probably didn't explain it well/
