Default The dreaded "offset" error... someone please help.

I was working on a file in the Linux (Ubuntu) version, and it suddenly froze, had an error, and then wouldn't let me open the file anymore.

I tried to open it in the most recent xtreme pro trial version in Windows (Jul 2008), and got the dreaded "offset" message. I think something I did to it in Linux hurt it. Do Windows users ever have any of these problems?

Attached is the message I get when I try to open it, and the actual file I'm trying to open.

I was just rotating an element when it died.

It is a really important file to me... and I love Xara so much more than Illustrator. It rocks. can someone please help?

    Thank you so much!

    Jim

    Hello Jim,

    Welcome to Talkgraphics.

Unfortunately your file does not seem to contain any usable data.

I used Xara's windows command line utility expandxar.exe to expand your file and tried opening it in Xtreme Pro 4.0. I got an access violation error. See attached image.

    Hi Jim,

I seem to have had some luck.

I used expandXar via ExpandXarFE utility from TG member Stan Day.
No errors were reported. I opened the file in Xtreme version 3.2 (version 4 just crashes) as it allows me to cancel out of the error message.
The file loaded and I was able to then 'export' the file as a new .xar (attached)

Only you can tell me if it's fully intact?

It now opens fine in all versions of Xtreme

Man, you guys are lightning fast.

Hey sledger, yes, I actually was able to salvage that much in the Linux version. The actual file has additional trees, rocks, etc on the islands...

Oh well. I really love the Linux version, and don't want to run Windoze on my PC box. But I gotta do what I gotta do and I hate Illustrator. It's just so ... unnatural.

Any suggestions for a more stable Linux version, or should I just run xtreme Pro on Wine? Does the Windows version have as many errors?

    Thanks so much again!

It has been a couple of years since I used XaraLX (Linux version). It has been that long since any updates were made to that version as well.

Xtreme version 4.0 has exhibited fewer error messages than some of the previous Windows versions. In my experience no program for any OS is immune to experiencing some errors at some point in time.

Some people have reported they are very happy using XaraLX under Wine.

    Hi Soquili,

XaraLX is the linux version. Wine is a Windows emulator. So you mean, running the Windows Xtreme Pro under Wine, right?

    Thanks!
