    Default The Powershot G10 thread

Late last year I needed a more portable camera for situations where the dSLR wasn't appropriate or just too bulky. I also wanted good movie recording. Some may recall that after several weeks of reading reviews and considered deliberation I settled for a LUMIX DMC-LZ10. I was thoroughly disappointed with it's IQ every time I took a photo.
I'd been eyeing off the Powershot G10 but the expense was bothering me.
Finaly, after photos from an evening out with my newly emigrated family made my gut sink with disappointment once again - I thought no more about the expense and ordered the G10 right away.
It arrived yesterday and this morning I have charged the battery and started to play.

The G10 shoots RAW as well as JPG, however though I always shoot raw with dSLR, I think JPG will be the order of the day for the G10.
So far the results are exactly what I want from a pocket camera.

As to the camera itself, it's built like a tank (cast magnesium alloy body) and weighs nicely in the hand. Too large for a shirt pocket, but fine for a jacket pocket.
Although it takes a proprietary lithium battery (I have ordered an extra two) rather than the preferred AA (as the dSLR does) each charge is said to allow 400 shots while using the LCD screen to compose the shot. Many more if you use the analog viewfinder.

Here's a cropped shot of my mate Peekai.

I remember the thread, Steve. I also gave you some input on the Canon S5 at the time (well, mostly the negative). Well, I think I am where you are now... I hate the S5... It's worse now... I wish I could afford having an "accident" with it, so I could buy a new one. It is just too unreliable -- I never know what the heck I'm capturing. I'm glad you didn't pick up the S5 despite my 10 "most hates about it list".

Will be looking forward to more G10 shots, as I am curious. Thanks for posting -- it looks good.

The S5 IS was too bulky to consider.
The flip-out screen might have been good on the G10 though.

The G10 has many software functions which will take a bit of time to go through and learn which to ignor completely
The problems with these "bells'n'whistles" menu systems is that there is more room for bugs.

    Steve,
If those shots are anything to go by it looks as if you have made an excellent choice. The detail in the train shot is tops.
There is nothing more frustrating than to have a good pic in front of you but when you take it home in the camera it turns out well below standard. Might as well not have a camera at all than to do that.

    Thanks Rupert and Bill.
Looking for photo opportunities requires more time than always available.
Though I should find it easier to keep the G10 close at hand thereby not missing too many.

That's very sharp, Steve. Even with my poor eyes at the moment I can make out the spider.

There's a (very) old ex-Army shed next door to me. The house is vacant now.
No fences here, so I thought to take a few shots while there's no-one to object.

Played just a wee bit in Xtreme with this one.

I like that very much Steve. The transition between colour and grayscale is very subtle.
