I don't want to be a killjoy but you find similar techniques in the tutorials at xaraxone (they may be some years old though before there were any 3D tools in xara... oh, I'm feeling so old )
But on the other hand, I happy for you to find new ways of doing things (especially on the linux platform)

One other thing I can't seem to remember is, if there is a possibility to change colors when using a repeated, gradient fill in the Linux version?
I remember using these features before, but can't remember if it was on the windows or Linux version
