Saving jpg compression ?

Hi,
I use PhotoPaint X3 for working with some of my bitmap images. The question I have is besides having the 'compression' dialogue there is an option for the Algoritm, there is an option for sub-format 4.2.2 or 4.4.4
Which is the best sub format, and what do they mean?
