How can I make text look like it was done by cutting/slashing with a knife?

Thanks for the info, I can certainly use that later. However, what I'm trying to do is make the background of my picture look kinda like Zorro carved it up, the letters themselves looking like slash marks.

Use the Pen Tool to draw some lines similar to the letters. Stroke those paths with a hard brush using simulated pen pressure.
