I revisited the technique I have shown in a post on the Gallery some times ago.
A little "how to" soon!

1 Import image and resize it to the height correspondig to the largest brush width you want to use.
2 Slice it (here I divided it into eight parts) and conserve only the two extremes, then select fill tool and check "single tile".
3 Apply elliptical transparency to each part.
4 Apply a blend to these two shapes (47 steps is good)
5 Convert to editable shapes and ungroup.
6 Create brush, unchecking "tile fills" in fill properties.
Then adjust spacing and pressure sensitivity scaling for each kind of use.

Thousands of applications where high resolution is not required: -applying this brush as a texture to other brushes with the same pressure profile, -creating warping rollover buttons in applying different degrees of pressure sensitivity for each image, ...

Enjoy,

I just tried your tutorial Ivan - so easy but the effects could be staggering.

Wow, that is a really useful effect! I had a play with your method and I came up with the attached image. All that I needed to do to create this was take an image from a previous project (see this page), split it up and create a brush using your method and then apply the brush to a circle (followed by a quick play with the spacing).

Wow! Now THAT'S a cool effect Johnathan.

I can think of a few ways i'd use that kind of effect.

Thanks for the idea!

And of course, thanks to Ivan for the initial inspiration!

Thanks to all! But if I will be totally transparent I must explain what about the medallion in the image above. In fact this is a very simple application of this technique.

1. draw a short straight line
2. give it the width of the brush you will use (here 150 pts) and an ellipse pressure profile
3. apply the brush (here I have turned scaling pressure to the maximum in brush settings) and adjust spacing in brush settings till your image is entirely included in the elliptic shape
4. draw an ellipse approximatively identical to the shape of your image and move it to back
5. apply Clipview and feathering, add shadow and superpose another shape with white fill and elliptical transparency for reflexion.

Of course you can use warped bitmap to create abstract brushes. This one was made with a photograph of a true lilac pink climbing rose I obtained from seeds some years ago.
I simply stretched the bitmap before creating a brush with it with the technique seen above.

Regards,
